We visited Fitzroy Island in Tropical North Queensland from Oct 27 – 31, 2014. The island is a 45 minute boat ride from Cairns, which is a 3.5 hour flight from Melbourne. The resort and adjacent camp ground are the only places to stay on the island, which is covered mostly by national parkland. We snorkelled and swam every day in waters that we were told it’s common to spot sea turtles. Sadly we saw one only in the turtle rehab centre (still fulfilling a major childhood wish of mine). We saw an amazing array of beautiful colourful corals and abundant tropical fish, as well as lots of bats (flying foxes), lizards, birds, and tropical plant life.
